The Book Fare Cafe was opened in 2004 when the new Village Books space was completed.  It was opened by Fred and Lynn Berman, who previously operated Pastazza and Pizzaza. Rachel Vasak, the executive director of the Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association purchased the restaurant in 2006.  She passed the business on to Glo Calderhead and Lori Wetzel in 2009.  Currently at the helm, chef-owner Charles Claassen.

After a lengthy old-world apprenticeship, Charles spent nearly twenty years leading professional kitchens before taking proprietorship of the Book Fare.  Previous to a short stint operating Sprout Catering, Charles was the chef/foodservice manager at North Cascades Institute‘s Environmental Learning Center.  Charles continues to educate about the power of food choice through the Book Fare Cafe, supporting local farmers, fishers, and food artisans while creating iconic Northwest light fare with a European bent.
